1. The Boise St game was originally schedule for the start of October, but ESPN moved the game up to be a Labor Day showcase of two top 10 teams. VT’s defense will have a lot of new faces next year and will start the year against a team returning 21 starters. Yeesh. I think VT would have been favored in early October, but will fall in the opener.

2. It is a very boring schedule until the start of November. VT should run the slate through October, but could struggle @BC. The Hokies haven’t won in Chestnut Hill since 2002.

3. November is brutal. I like that VT will have extra time to prepare for GT’s triple option and UNC’s NFL defense. The game @Miami will either be in front of a packed house or no one, depending on how well the ‘canes season is going.

4. I see the season going 10-2, with an opening loss to Boise St and a loss either @UNC or @Miami. Hopefully 7-1 is good enough to win the Coastal.

I have a passion for soccer. A dream of mine is to attend a World Cup in a country outside of the U.S. For the last few years I have told all my friends that I will make it to South Africa 2010 no matter what. My enthusiasm changed when it was reported that the event infrastructure was so off schedule that FIFA was considering moving the WC to the U.S. I also took into account the very high AIDS prevalence rate in the country. Then a few team hotels were robbed during 2009’s Confederation Cup, a sort of WC warm up tournament. The terror that happened at the African Cup of Nations to the Togo team bus a few days ago brought more safety concerns. Apparently I’m not the only one concerned about safety during the tournament, so some very creative company comes up with this:

Our approach to bring protective clothing to the masses is unique. By enabling your protective vest to communicate with each other through messages like “Enjoy the game” or “Fair Play” we hope we can bring a new dimension to body armour. Our vest can be decorated with badges of your choice and we are open to your creativity. Design your vest now

We are seeing a high demand in personal protective clothing and there is no doubt that the risk is increasing at big events like the World Cup 2010 especially if you are travelling in areas where you are unsure about your personal safety. Read more in our security facts

That’s right, custom bullet proof vests.

I understand there majority of people in Charlotte came from another area of the country. Almost all still root for the teams they grew up cheering for and at best consider the Carolina Panthers their “2nd” team. I am included in this group. Even after accepting this I am discouraged by all the franchises represented during the Vikings/Panthers game last night. Below is a list of team apparel I saw at the game last night:

That’s 17 teams accounted for. THAT’S MORE THAN HALF THE LEAGUE!

Yankee Payroll by Year since 1996:

1996 62,000,000
1997 73,000,000
1998 74,000,000
1999 92,000,000
2000 113,000,000
2001 110,000,000
2002 126,000,000
2003 150,000,000
2004 183,000,000
2005 208,000,000
2006 195,000,000
2007 190,000,000
2008 209,000,000
2009 201,000,000
Total: 1,986,000,000

$2B for 5 titles in 14 years and $1.7B this decade for 2.

This is the Yankees first world championship after spending $200M plus in a season. Like they say, third time’s the charm!

Onyewu Joins A.C. Milan

Onyewu signing with Milan is a big step for US Soccer

Oguchi Onyewu had a big Confederations Cup tournament and it paid off in a large way by signing with Italian football powerhouse AC Milan. This will only matter if Gooch gets a legitimate chance to play. There have been quite a few USMNT players that have not had a lot of playing time with their European clubs (Altidore and Adu being the most notable) and it has shown in their recent national team appearances. If Gooch plays often and plays well expect more and more looks from the large Euro clubs to US players.

I went 0-4 last week. If there’s a better way to start a blog please share.

Here’s my quick predictions for the conference championship games. Again, only take these if you want to lose money.

Philadelphia (-4) over Arizona

Philly’s the new Boston.

Eagles 24 Arizona 17

Pittsburgh (-6) over Baltimore

I still think Big Ben should retire.

Steelers 13 Ravens 3

Want to lose some money?  Here are my picks for week 2 of the NFL playoffs!

Tennessee (-3) over Baltimore

Two identical teams.  Both have killer defenses.  Both want to run it down your throat.  Both well coached.  Tennessee has been a top 4 team all year.  Baltimore is getting a lot of bandwagon love after destroying a very overrated Dolphins team last week.  Look for Joe Flacco to get touched a few times this week (unlike Round 1) if Titans are up in the 2nd half.

Titans 17 Ravens 6

Carolina (-9.5) over Arizona

Yawn.  Uptown should be pretty fun Saturday.

Panthers 31 Cardinals 17

New York (-4) over Philadelphia

How are the Giants not a touchdown favorite here?  Here’s what Philly has done since McNabb was benched during the tie in Cincinnati:

LOSS @ Baltimore 36-7

WON Arizona 48-20

WON @ Giants 20-14

WON Cleveland 30-10

LOSS @ Redskins 10-3

WON Dallas 44-6

Should we be impressed here?  Sure they beat Minnesota on the road last week, but, Tavaris Jackson only scares those that have money on the Vikings.  The Giants had just lost Plaxico in Week 14, Cleveland is Cleveland, the loss in Washington is inexcusable, and Philly had already proved they could score on Dallas in the Monday Nighter earlier this year.  After all of this, Vegas is telling me on a neutral field these Eagles are only a 1 point dog to The Champs?

Giants 27 Eagles 13

San Diego (+6) over Pittsburgh

Big Ben has no business playing football ever again.  In his short career he already has three concussions and one ugly motorcycle accident.  You have a ring.  You are beloved by your fans.  You have your money.  You have nothing to prove.   Ben, don’t you want to remember all of this one day?

I would not be shocked if San Diego won this straight up.  If a road team wins this weekend, this is the one.

Steelers 16 Chargers 14
